Jewelry is one of those things that, if I wear an outfit and look in the mirror without it, I just feel like something's missing. The minute I put on jewelry, it's just magic—my outfit comes together effortlessly.
Jewelry might be the most surprising, affordable thing in your closet when you think about how often you can wear it. It's quite frequent compared to something like a shirt that you might wear once a week at most.
Although, the worst thing in the world is buying a piece of jewelry and immediately regretting it. So, I want to share some tips to prevent buyer's remorse when it comes to jewelry and ensure you truly love every piece you own.
Make It Meaningful
The first thing I want to talk about is that jewelry needs to be meaningful. When I have a piece of jewelry that represents a place I love or someone I care about, I’m bound to cherish that piece. One way to achieve this is through a monogram or by connecting the piece to a place or a person you love.
For example, some zodiac collections allow you to wear a piece featuring the zodiac sign of yourself or someone you love. The necklace that I ofter wear is a symbol of the Leo constellation, representing my daughter's zodiac sign. I could have chosen my own sign, but choosing hers makes it even more special.
Although I’ve never been much of an astrology person, I like that it’s a constellation. To me, it’s special because of its connection to astronomy—something especially meaningful as my grandfather was an astronomy professor. It’s symbolic in two very personal ways to me.
Stick To Minimal
Next, I always aim to keep my jewelry a bit more on the minimal side. When I was a teenager, I used to wear giant, colorful statement earrings all the time—even with something as casual as a sweatshirt. I think I did that because I had longer hair and, well, I was younger. Looking back, though, it wasn’t really timeless as much as something more minimal would be.
The great thing about minimal jewelry is its versatility. You can layer it and it's not something that you will easily get sick of. Plus, it’s subtle enough that no one will think, Oh, she’s wearing that necklace again.
When you choose pieces that can be worn every day, then you can accessorize with them and make them special in their own way. That’s the beauty of minimal jewelry—it’s simple yet endlessly adaptable.
Quality Over Quantity
Next, when it comes to jewelry, I always think of it as quality over quantity. Jewelry is something you can layer and continuously add to, so I prefer to start with quality pieces and build from there over time. It’s a slow process, so far it’s taken me a couple of years to build my jewelry collection. And I’ve gradually moved from cheap pieces to brand pieces. It doesn't mean you need to choose only solid gold jewelry, but you need choose one of better quality and durable.
When I think about my jewelry collection, I want it to be something that I can add to over the years. I don’t want to buy everything all at once, get tired of the trends, or stop adding new pieces entirely. By building my collection slowly, I can make thoughtful purchases and selections. ensuring that my jewelry remains timeless and versatile.
Focus On Heirloom
All of these tips so far tie into my next one: thinking about jewelry as heirlooms. This is something I always keep in mind—whether a piece will be something I could pass down one day. I remember when I was about five, my grandma had a opal ring that I loved so much. She promised it to me. And one day, I plan to have it and store it carefully, keep it safe, and probably only wear it on special occasions.
It’s so meaningful to me because it’s more than just a piece of jewelry—it’s a family treasure. So heirloom is definitely what I will think about whenever I add to my jewelry collection.
Know Your Size
And finally, when it comes to picking out jewelry, one of the most regretful purchases can be a piece that doesn’t fit right. This is especially true for rings, which can be tricky.
When choosing ring sizes, I think it’s best to start with your middle-sized finger rather than going straight for a pinky or thumb ring. For me, that’s my index finger. If I get a ring sized for that finger, I have more flexibility — if I gain or lose weight or feel a bit bloated, I can easily switch it to another finger. Rings are one of those items that might eventually need resizing, so starting with a middle-sized fit just makes sense.
This concept also applies to necklaces. I look for adjustable chains or necklaces in lengths I don’t already have in my collection. For instance, if I already own several 16-inch or 24-inch necklaces, I’d rather get a 20-inch one to avoid tangling and add variety. Adjustable lengths and thoughtfully chosen sizes make pieces more wearable and ensure they’ll stand the test of time. I strongly recommend to choose necklace or bracelet with extender chain like this:
